Antique Liverpool Door Knocker.
An extremely well detailed door knocker of a Liver bird, the symbol of the English city Liverpool.
It can be seen on the cities official coat of arms which depicts the Liver bird with a branch of laver (sea weed) in it’s mouth as a pun on the cities name.
The back plate depicts the Mersey Mermaid. It is claimed in 1848 Richard Mattign boarded a ship bound for America. Unfortunately the ship sank due to a fire on board, hundreds lost their lives. But Richard was saved and placed on the beach at Hoylake by the mermaid!
